The prolific French composer Olivier Messiaen found birdsong particularly fascinating, and incorporated transcriptions of birdsong into his music. Among his wonderful works for solo piano is a collection of thirteen remarkable pieces called Catalogue d'oiseaux written between 1956 and 1958. Messiaen's wife, Jeanne Loriod, was a virtuoso pianist for whom he wrote many of his later piano works; she premiered many, as well.
