Spring has sprung! Hear the birds...?!

The prolific French composer Olivier Messiaen found birdsong particularly fascinating, and incorporated transcriptions of birdsong into his music.  Among his wonderful works for solo piano is a collection of thirteen remarkable pieces called Catalogue d'oiseaux written between 1956 and 1958.  Messiaen's wife, Jeanne Loriod, was a virtuoso pianist for whom he wrote many of his later piano works;  she premiered many, as well.  Listen to the  youtube performance of Loriod  playing Catalogue, and for those of you with Apple Music, listen and watch the outstanding Pierre Laurent Aimard
