Saving advice on cleaning piano keys......

3/28/2020

How to clean those piano keys at home:  Steinway &
Sons recommends using hydrogen peroxide (careful apply it to a paper tower, completely away from the piano so as not to risk a spill onto the keys!  And be sure to only use such a small amount that no liquid would drip into the space between the keys).  Wipe down keys, then wash your hands!  The RPG (Piano technicians guild) recommends this:
New recommendations from PTGPiano Technicians Guilds has recently published the document “Covid-19 and Piano Care”.
Their general recommendations are:
  • Use alcohol-based disinfectants, do not use bleach-based disinfectants or any product containing citrus as this may discolor the piano keys.
  • If using a spray or liquid bottle, use a disposable towel. Put the disinfectant on the TOWEL and not the piano!!
  • After use, immediately put the towel or disinfectant hand wipe in the trash and wash your hands as the CDC recommends. Do not use reusable towels or cloths which could spread germs.
  • Always follow up with a dry towel and never leave any liquids on the piano or keys.

So who here knows the English-born brilliant arranger, composer, producer, player of zillions of instruments, etc. etc. JACOB COLLIER??  He can provide a little sunshine for me when I give him a listen!
Quoting from Wiki:  Collier's style fuses elements of jazz, a cappella, groove, folk, electronic music, classical music, gospel, soul and improvisation, and often features extreme use of reharmonisation. In 2014, Collier signed to Quincy Jones' management company and began working on his one-man, audio-visual live performance vehicle, designed and built at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[3]
In 2016, Collier released his debut album, In My Room, which was entirely self-recorded, arranged, performed and produced in the small back room of his family home in Finchley, north London.[4] In 2017, Collier was awarded two Grammys for his arrangements of "Flintstones" and "You And I", both from the album.[5]
In 2018, Collier began working on Djesse, a four-volume, 50-song album featuring more than two dozen artists and ensembles. The first album, Djesse Vol. 1, was released in December 2018; and the second, Djesse Vol. 2, was released in July 2019. In January 2020, Collier won two Grammy Awards for his arrangements of "All Night Long" on Djesse Vol. 1 and "Moon River" on Djesse Vol. 2.
PLEASE give a listen to Jacob on youtube (I couldn't link all my favs)  Let me know what you think at your lesson!

I promised that I would make effort to update this Blog as often as I can during these "Stay at Home" days!  My own email has been flooded with listening, watching reading suggestions involving music:  I begin to share some of my thoughts here!  Pop critics from around the world offer suggestions of what to listen to for a pick-me-up in this Podcast from the NY Times.......  and from that same paper, a lovely article about a new recording by the pianist Vikingur Olafsson that comes out on March 27th called Debussy Rameau.  This album, which I will look forward to hearing, explores the connection between these two composers across the centuries.  I am constantly fascinated how musicians plan recital programs, new album material, etc.  as this is something that I absolutely adore doing myself (re. recent my recitals exploring Schubert "inspirations" and piano music devoted to water reference.  Remind me to tell you about other "collaborations" I have in mind!!
