Listening to Frederic Chiu this morning, with an article in the New York Times, as he is performing his arrangement of the troika from Prokofiev's "Lieutenant Kije Suite". Splashy transcription!

was quite interested in aboriginal music. He also used the didgeridoo in some of his compositions: one in particular, entitled "Earth Cry". The didgeridoo is a wind instrument developed by Indigenous Australians of northern Australia around 1,500 years ago and still in widespread use today both in Australia and around the world. A modern didgeridoo is usually cylindrical or conical, and can measure anywhere from 1 to 3 m (3 to 10 ft) long. Most are around 1.2 m (4 ft) long. Generally, the longer the instrument, the lower the pitch or key of the instrument. Peter Sculthorpe has written much other music. The Independent describes his music this way: "… he derives much of his inspiration from nature… Indigenous musics from the Pacific Rim (Aboriginal, Japanese, Balinese and the sounds of the wild birds, wind, thunder) are evocative sources." Peter has also written some very beautiful piano music. One of my current favs is called "Djilile". I'm really enjoying practicing this piece! |
